Paige New

Get to know fellow Bootcamper Paige New

1.    What is your name? Do you have a nickname?
Paige.  Lots in the past such as Paigey-Poo…but nothing right now.

2.    Do you have any goals you are reaching for between now and the end of the year?
To reactivate my real estate license in the state of CA.  Lose 5 lbs and to keep active even during stressful times which seem to be when I want to hibernate.

3.    What have you done in the past year that you weren’t sure that you could achieve? How did you do it?
This last year has been a complete whirlwind of life changes/transition. Short version: moved back to the U.S. last August after living in Mexico for 5 years and now my husband lives 60% of the time in Mexico for work so he is not always with the family.  Honestly, I never felt unsure about whether or not we would “achieve” success…… but I definitely underestimated the challenges that my family and I would face.  I think we are adjusting and “achieving” success in our new life because of how close we are as a Family unit and the fact that we all have a great sense of humor!

4.    Where did you grow up?  Where did  you go to college if applicable?
I moved to Palos Verdes, CA in 4th Grade and lived there through high school until I went to CSU, Chico.

5.    Do you have kids? What are their names and ages?
Three kids: Harrison (18), McKenna (16), and Graham (almost 14).

6.    Women: What did you do before you were a mom? Women and Men: Or What do you do for work now?
Before Kids ……Counseled new parents who worked for large corporations on child care options and how to balance work and family.  I laugh now….how did I even do that?  I didn’t even have kids !!  Since then my husband and I have always had our own businesses related to home building/real estate and business consulting.

7.    How long have you worked out with Forever Fit? And How did you hear about us?
I found out about Forever Fit through Lina Waage and started last March.

Which classes do you usually take?
Monday, Thursday and Friday.

8.    What do you like most about bootcamp?
I love that the bootcamp is outside and that the venue is different each day.

9.    What hobbies or interests do you have?
I grew up riding horses and still enjoy riding any chance I can get.  So  if any one has a horse that needs to be exercised…I’m your girl!

10.Tell us one thing most people don’t know about you
I’m adopted.

11.What’s on your ipod right now (favorite tune(s))
Sublime, Iration, Aerosmith

12.What’s your favorite movie?
Somewhere in Time with Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymour

13.What’s your biggest splurge in life?
Massages when I am in Mexico…I get about 3 per week when I’m there!

14. How would your closest friend(s) describe you?

Oh, who knows!  I think they would say I am a good friend..loyal and generous.  Not high maintenance AT ALL.  Very positive…I am the glass is half full kind of girl. And I am definitely a planner….oh I forgot about that nickname…Planner Paige!

Week 6

Heather Moss

Get to know fellow Bootcamper Heather Moss

What is your name? Do you have a nickname?
Heather Moss. We use a lot of nicknames in our house. My husband has been calling me “Chubs” pretty consistently since I was 21.

Do you have any goals you are reaching for between now and the end of the year?
I’d like to get back into running shape so I can comfortably do a 10K; to get my house organized; and to have at least one cool, family adventure.

What have you done in the past year that you weren’t sure that you could achieve? How did you do it?
Well, this past year was a bit unusual. I had an acute onset of vestibular neuritis last spring, and for a while thought I would be impaired for the rest of my life. When I stopped getting better on my own, my doctor referred me to Vestibular Rehab at Scripps in La Jolla. I’ve been amazed at how much it helped, and the progress I’ve made in the past two months. The whole process has made me realize the value of working just a little bit each day toward a goal.

Where did you grow up? Where did you go to college if applicable?
I grew up in Demarest, NJ, in a classic suburban, east-coast neighborhood. I went to Wesleyan University, in Middletown, CT, and to UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.

Do you have kids? What are their names and ages?
I have three kids: Julia, 14, a freshman at CCA; Jackson, 12, a 6th grader at Sage Canyon: and Max, 8, a 3rd grader at Sage Canyon.

What did you do before you were a mom or what do you do for work now
I’ve worked with animals and in veterinary medicine since I was in college. I was working as a small animal general practitioner until last May, and hope to go back to work in the next year.

How long have you worked out with Forever Fit? And How did you hear about us?
I was lucky enough to be witness to the inception of Forever Fit, when it was just a glimmer in Deanne’s eye! I have been a boot-camper, on and off, ever since.

Which classes do you usually take?
I really enjoy the Monday and Friday classes

What do you like most about bootcamp?
Deanne, of course. I also like that it is outside, and that everyone is so friendly and encouraging.

What hobbies or interests do you have?
I really do enjoy kid and animal husbandry. I like cooking for my family, when I have the time. I also like outdoor activities, like hiking, running, biking, and camping.

Tell us one thing most people don’t know about you.
I played rugby for 7 & ½ years, in college and for a few years after.  It is my favorite sport to play!  I also played ice hockey for 4 years in college, but was terrible at it.

What’s on your ipod right now (favorite tune(s))
I mostly listen to Pandora for music.  My newest station is Professor Longhair.  My stations include Classical, Jazz, Classic Rock, Southern-Fried Rock, Pop (for my kids), Indie, Blues, and Comedy.
I also listen to a lot of podcasts.

What’s your favorite movie?
It’s a tie between Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and Winnie the Pooh (the old one from the 70’s)

What’s your biggest splurge in life?
Napping.  I take a 20 to 45 minute nap almost every afternoon.

How would your closest friend(s) describe you?
I asked a few of them:

“Down-to-earth, compassionate, sincere [I do speak my mind for better or worse], thoughtful, smart AND wise.”

“Joyful and fun, warm and kind.”

…friend with refrigerator benefits; comfortable enough in her own skin to wear pjs when dropping kids at school; can talk everything from novels to underwear; east coast mentality in a west coast body; always willing to hold your hair back when needed; great smile and heart; best mom ever; real; amazing athlete; homebody; barefoot...”

Then I paid them.

Week 5

Lisa Blazer

Get to know fellow Bootcamper Lisa Blazer

1. Do you have any goals you are reaching for between now and the end of the year?  Losing 5-8 pounds, becoming stronger and more toned

2. What have you done in the past year that you weren’t sure that you could achieve? How did you do it? I ran a 10 K in November at a 9 min pace, and a 5K in January at an 8 mi pace. I still felt strong and energetic at the end, which surprised me.

3. Where did you grow up?  Where did  you go to college? I grew up here in San Diego (Del Mar) and attended Del Mar Hills, Earl Warren and then Torrey Pines before heading to Pitzer College for undergrad and Tufts University for graduate school

4. Do you have kids? What are their names and ages? Keaton (16), Kyle (13) and Landon (10)

5. What did you do before you were a mom? I taught elementary school and now tutor and volunteer every chance I can get. I’m passionate about literacy and run a reading program at my son’s elementary school.

6. How long have you worked out with Forever Fit? Exactly one year this month! I’ve weighed the same since high school (give or take a few pounds) and had suddenly gained 8 lbs. in a year. I was extremely unhappy about that and decided to do something about it. Bootcamp did the trick!

7. Which classes do you usually take? I typically attend 3-5  classes per week with the location and time depending on my ever-changing schedule

8. What do you like most about bootcamp? It’s a great workout with a fabulous instructor. I love being surrounded by healthy, supportive and friendly people who inspire and motivate.

9. What hobbies or interests do you have? I love to scrapbook, cook and play games. I enjoy spending most all of my free time with friends and family doing all of the aforementioned activities, but on the rare occasion that I’m alone I’m happiest curling up with a good book.

10. Tell us one thing most people don’t know about you.  Hmmm… that’s a tough one. I’m pretty much an open book. I doubt there’s anything I could say most don’t know if they’ve spent more than a few hours with me. One thing that often surprises people is that I truly dislike all coffee and alcoholic beverages. I’ve never tasted coffee because I can’t even stand the smell, and have never been tipsy because after one sip I’m certain I don’t like the taste of anything. The only drugs I’ve had are from a doctor, and then pretty reluctantly because I don’t like the way they make me feel. My “drug” of choice is most definitely sugar! I met my husband when he responded to an ad I posted 20 years ago tomorrow, in fact!) in search of a roommate. I knew immediately that he was “the one” and not a day has passed that I don’t feel grateful and fortunate to be married to him.

11. What’s on your ipod right now (favorite tune(s))  We saw the fabulous musical Finding Neverland on Broadway while on a summer vacation in New York this summer. I love the music and have been listening to it almost daily. In general, I’m pretty eclectic with my likes of music.

12. What’s your favorite movie? No real favorite movie, but hundreds of favorite books! I love anything by Jodi Picoult.

13. What’s your biggest splurge in life? Definitely not a “spurging” kind of person. I started saving at age 10 so that I could be a stay-at-home mom and never really changed my habits because I want to keep it that way! I suppose a family splurge is theatre tickets. We’ve only been to the movie theatre as a family once, but have been to a couple dozen plays as a family. Fortunately, my kids love the theatre as much as my husband and I do!

14. How would your closest friend(s) describe you? Do I have to answer that one? ;)  I suppose friendly, helpful, opinionated, loyal, healthy  and passionate about her husband and kids.

Week 4

Shannon Peck

Get to know fellow Bootcamper Shannon Peck

I work out to stay in shape, build muscle tone, and stay strong.

I was a competitive skater in my youth here in San Diego and Los Angeles. Due to my relentless pursuit of excellence, I stayed in a sport that I wasn't completely suited for due to my height. I stuck it out and was a strong Regional competitor with consistent double axels. It all worked out for me as I was offered many principal spots with Ice Capades, Holiday on Ice, Disney on Ice and even Sea World in San Diego. I played the roles of Barbie, and the Blue Fairy from the story of Pinnochio, to name a few.

Since my years as a traveling skater, I have become an avid Marathon runner, completing 7 full Marathons and many Half Marathons.  I love the challenge of breaking through that utter fatigue that plagues me at mile 20. With a recent heel injury, I have not been running. Thank goodness for Deanne and Shaun who have helped me stay in shape over the summer even though I've had to take a break from running. I feel just as strong as I used to running 20 miles a week! I have also seen improvements in my upper body strength that I never achieved running.

I have two kids, Caden (14) and Trinity (12) who are budding athletes as well.
I currently coach competitive skating and welcome the day I will not have to wake up at 4am to teach skaters before school. Ahh, the life of an athlete!

Can’t think of anything.

What do you do for work?
Attorney

How long have you worked out with Forever Fit?
Since the first day Deanne did “Men Only” classes way back when. Tuesday/Thursday started off as guys only. I joined to get a few friends to come because their wives wanted them to workout. It then expanded to the “advanced” class, as we lost guys. I’m the lone hold over from those original days.

Which classes do you usually take?
T/TH … I’m not even sure what they are called, and have never signed in for the classes. Somehow my lovely wife does that all.

What do you like most about bootcamp?
Being outside, variety, and stairs/ramp (more running than Crossfit, etc.)

What hobbies or interests do you have?
Soccer, golf, lounging at the pool or beach. Didn’t get to do any of those this summer.  I did run track at BYU for a year, and several friends have encouraged me to do marathons or triathlons … No interest.

Tell us one thing most people don’t know about you
Cassie and I met on a blind date early in our freshman year at BYU, and dated all year. I left to serve a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Boise, Idaho (I know … not the exotic mission of which everyone imagines). When I returned, we picked up again and were married a year later. In hindsight, I love the idea of marrying young and building a life together over a long time period.

What’s on your ipod right now?
My ipod is a collection of all the family’s music. So, I have everything. I prefer 80s rock or 80s alt remixes or anything with a good fast beat for running. Right now I seem to be playing Fall Out Boy and Imagine Dragons regularly.
What’s your favorite movie?
Star Wars, Goonies, Tommy Boy, Count of Monte Cristo, and the entire Fast and Furious saga (don’t hate)

What’s your biggest splurge in life?
Travel with Cass … when we get time.

How would your closest friend(s) describe you?

Either “He’s a jerk” or “Fun,” depending on the time of day.

I want to look good in a pair of shorts. I want to making exercising and eating healthier a focus again. Train myself to eat more frequently to help boost my metabolism.

What have you done in the past year that you weren’t sure that you could achieve? How did you do it?
I started a company in interior design and home renovations.  I started out doing it a bit here and there and the next thing I knew was I was buried under it and learning more than I thought was possible.  Many things went to the wayside especially exercise and eating right.  The rewards at the end of the day were what kept me going.  Now its time to keep it going but putting a healthier life style back into place.

I love helping with the boys sports teams designing uniforms, spirit wear and helping with travel plans for the teams and other team manager responsibilities.   I also love to cooking and creating new meals especially when I am not rushed.

Tell us one thing most people don’t know about you
Most people think I have 3 boys but really I have 4.

What’s on your ipod right now (favorite tune(s))
I rarely listen to music and never when I am working out.  I like the peace and quite, probably because I have 4 boys and I look forward to silence and letting my mind wonder.  If I had to pick a song I would have to say Tequila Remix by JRabbt

What’s your favorite movie?
How to lose a guy in 10 days with Matthew McConaughey, who doesn’t want to stare at him for 90 minutes?

What’s your biggest splurge in life?
I wish I could say I hit the spa frequently but in reality I don’t splurge much at all.  Maybe a great bag now and again.

Week 1

Kerry Zisook

Get to know fellow Boot camper Kerry Zisook

1.     What changes have you noticed since joining Forever Fit?
The biggest change I’ve noticed is how mindful I’ve become of what I’m eating.  I’ve also noticed that since joining Forever FIt my endurance has increased and my upper body has gotten much stronger.

2.   To what do you credit these changes specifically? What changes have you made that are making all the difference?
When I did the 5lbs in 5 weeks I wrote down EVERYTHING I ate and even though I’m no longer writing down my food intake I’m still thinking that way.  It has helped me control snacking and eating too many sweets.  I try not to keep food in the house that tempt me such as cookies or salty snacks.  I keep all the fruit on the counter so that I grab that to snack on.  I also have a food plan for all my meals by Sunday night and try to stick with it until the following Sunday.  I also really love to exercise and always have.  It’s not a chore for me at all and being able to work this hard AND be outside is IDEAL!

3.    What has been the hardest part about the process for you?  What have you done specifically to overcome these challenges?
The hardest part for me is still the sweets.  My kids and husband love sweets and they continue to eat them so I have to have a lot of self control...which is extremely hard when it comes to cookies!!  I found a recipe for an avocado pudding made with maple syrup and 100% cocoa.  I eat that after dinner to get a sweet fix and it fills me up. I’ve been able to stop eating at 7 and not eat until at least 7 the next morning for about 10 + weeks now!  I still love to go get frozen yogurt and allow myself something if I really want it...moderation!

4.  If you could give other Forever Fitters one piece of advice, what would it be?

To be kind to yourself and honor yourself by showing up to work out.  It’s the best therapy!

Here's a Personal Note from Kristin to all her friends at Forever Fit...

As many of you know, I will be moving to the Northern California in July. My husband got his dream job at Google and is absolutely loving it. I am very sad at the thought of moving. I have so many wonderful and dear friends here. Many of whom I have met at Forever Fit or become closer with through this experience. I can honestly say that joining Deanne’s boot camp was a fluke and completely out of character. My husband was thrilled when I bid on the Holiday Challenge, but asked if I had been “overserved” and was unaware of what I bid on. As I said above, I didn’t look for opportunities to work out.

Forever Fit has shown me that it is so much more than “working out.” I am eating healthier than I ever have and now look ways to be more fit. Little things like walking the dog farther, using the stairs more often or parking at the other end of the mall to walk a little more. This change is also due to the friends at bootcamp encouraging and pushing one another. It is an amazing experience.

I must give special thanks to Jill, who is unbelievable. I always knew she was a runner and super fit, so I was hesitant to ask her to be my buddy for the Holiday Challenge. She agreed and was encouraging and supportive and quite competitive. She made me want to work harder. Thank you Jill for getting me going on this wonderful path. That said, I could only be her partner once. I think I almost killed myself! Good luck Diana!

I know I will return often to visit my friends here in San Diego. I am so happy to know I will be able to drop in to work out with my Forever Fit family during those visits.

Thank you Deanne for being such an inspirational role model. The way you create classes allows for such variety, no one ever gets bored or knows quite what to expect. It makes me want to come to class and sad when I’ve missed one and heard about how great it was. You have really changed the way I live my life and I thank you for that. If only I can find someone half as incredible as you up North!

Thank you all and I’ll leave you with my version of “Thank You for the Music” from Mama Mia!

Thank you to Forever Fit
The exercises I'm doing
Thanks for all the joy
They're bringing
Who can live without them
I ask in all honesty
What would life be
Without a lunge or a plank what are we?
So I say thank you to Forever Fit
For giving it to me

I will miss you all!
THANK YOU!   Kristin :)
