DDT

So...How are you handling your DDT?? (DeanneDownTime). Personally, I am eating like a crazy person. Actually, to be honest with myself I am probably not eating as bad as other holiday years but so much worse than I should be. I think since I weighed in for the Holiday Challenge final weighin..I have had a total of (1) good eating day. I am working out though and that's the point of my post.

You see, tonight I am having those inklings of sore muscles that happen several hours after a kickbutt work out. And the best part about tonight's pain? I brought this on myself! And that is a good thing I tell ya. As my sons and husband played tennis at TPHS courts, I made up a DIY bootcamp. I ran to warm up, I did bench step ups and tricep dips, push ups in the sand, plank series, I did bicep curls, band back things through the fence, I did a 100 ct. crunch series [and they still played tennis] So...I did high knee skips across the the court, kick butt runs and side shuffles [now they were getting embarassed] but I pulled out the kettle bell, I did...swings and figure 8's and finally...finally their game ended so I could stretch.

Please tell me what you are doing during your DDT...

See you on Monday!!

Week 4

1st Place tie: Keely and Trish (19)
2nd Place: Karyn (15)
3rd Place: Amber (13)

Kathleen's Analysis: First off: Congratulations are in order to Trish--you rocked it this week to catch up to Keely! Oh, and Karyn...what's with "6" points this week? (another forever fit rockstar!)

Apparently, Deanne has promised 1 point/day if 1)you do the holiday challenge extra 100 calorie burning plan to be added to your everyday work out plan and 2)get a pic of yourself doing it and 3) email send it to her. (that's kindof a lot of hoop jumping [not to mention rope jumping] for this busy holiday cheerleader to manage, so you go!)
Just in case you were wondering, it is the pics that are cranking the weekly points up.
These leaders??...no, they have not been doing extra midnight workouts with Deanne...so stop calling her and asking when you can sign up for the extra sessions!

To make it through to the finish of this challenge, plan now to attend all three workout opps. this week. Monday (6 and/or 9:15) if you hit both of these...u r a double dipper and you have no holiday life;) Tuesday (9:15 Cardio Interval) and our big finish on Wednesday 9:15! breakfast and raffle to follow!

All I can say at this point as far as the weight part of the challenge is...hold on my friends, Wednesday soon cometh and the day of deliverence is nigh. (after we weigh in it's free for all til Jan. 1st) Also, once I feel myself stretching that 10% far beyond it's appropriate limits...lots of water and fiber baby...just flush it through!

Best of luck to each of you and may the MFFer (most forever fitter) win!!

call out and FFH

Thought I would pass the word that
Road Runner Sports (off of the 52)
has a 25% off deal going on if you are a VIP member.
(just through today. monday the 30th)

This is good...especially if you regularly buy running shoes
that are pretty pricy and rarely go on sale.

And if you need to have another reason to go...they also have
water bottle holders, nutrition for during and recovery, clothes and
a system to custom fit you into the right running shoe.

(Their electronics are not part of the deal.)

You are welcome Road Runner Sports.

PS. Is anyone else finding themselves with food fest hangover?

What is FFH you ask??

It is what you feel like the day you decide to stop eating like a freakin' maniac.

Like you keep checking your watch...certainly it has been 2-3 hrs since I last ate.

Your usual healthy food is tasting soooooo good but goes down sooooo fast!
(I have officially licked 2 bowls today. First was my oatmeal and blueberry bowl and second was
my yogurt/cottage cheese/sliced almonds/ a touch of OJ and tsp of orange zest bowl.)

Mmmmm. Now I must go distract myself for the next 2-3 hours.
How did this happen?!

FFH is definitely a condition with rapid onset.
Just last week I lost a pound, I swear I did.

Recap of the Week October 30th

What an amazing week in San Diego. It actually felt like fall a few times this week. We kicked off our week on Saturday with an amazing 5 mile run up the coast. We had over 20 runners join us for running, hill sprints, stair sprints, even some backward running. Everyone finished! I even heard that a few people were tracking their calories burned and were hovering around 700 - amazing! Fellow Camper and caterer extraordinaire, Keely, was waiting for us on the beach with a beautiful Forever Fit breakfast with white table linens and glass serving dishes. As always, she exceeded my expectations. How did we get so lucky to have her in our group? :)

Monday morning we started off with our timed 1/2 mile run. Cori Crockett led the group with a 3:30 finish only to discover the next day that the little nagging pain she has been experiencing in her foot is a hairline fracture. We wish you a speedy recovery and we know it will kill you not to do the running at camp but we'll do all we can to support you and help you recover. Michelle Weber had most improved time. She shaved off 36 seconds from the beginning of camp. Amber Hale was a close second with most improved finishing 31 seconds faster.

Emma joined us at 9:15 on Monday so we could divide into 2 groups and switch continuously between cardio and strength. Wow! That was a doozy of a workout.

We had a record high attendance at Torrey Del Mar on Wednesday with 16 people. Thanks to Ann Maas, Amber Hale and Michelle Weber for taking 1/2 the group and leading them through the same grueling workout. I think we were all inspired by Lauren's fun workout pants. Super groovy!!! I think we all need a pair for the next boot camp session. Kathleen, we have to get a picture of those.

Thursday morning, we switched up the venue with the guys and headed over to Torrey Hills. Our reason? We were hoping for some park lights instead of working out in the dark this week. Unfortunately the lights around the park were on a timer that went off at 6:00 sharp, leaving us one more week working out in the dark. We hit the infamous stairs and finished off with a killer circuit near the playground. We even got to play around on the swings, although not in a conventional way. We have 2 new campers on Thursday morning. Welcome Richard Gonor and Sean Edwards. Sean made a great playlist for us which I'll share on this blog as soon as I get a copy.

We ended the week at Torrey Hills today. We had a small group of 6 because of all the Halloween Parades and Parties at school. We may have been small but we were tough! We even had Barb and Keely back today who were recovering a bit from their recent half marathon and full marathon. Great to have you back ladies.

Other news this week: Happy Birthday Brigid Reed! Welcome back to camp Cassie Nelson. Welcome to camp Rebecca Burnett. We miss you Robin Gaines (who will be out for a few weeks with a hip flexor injury). And way to go Anni Torres for getting out this week and doing that coastal run on your own (after doing it with the group on Saturday). Also, we will be starting our Holiday Challenge after Thanksgiving. Details coming soon. Please read all of the new posts this week. Kathleen has challenged you to share your Halloween successes this week. One point for everyone who contributes to her post. That point will carry over to the holiday challenge (wink!). Have a great weekend everyone and stay away from that evil candy ;)

Just say "NO"!

All that sugar swirling around your house, your car and in every store, office or building you enter...it is EVIL! Stay strong...you know that nothing beats the feeling of loose jeans, a flat tummy, tight butt or making it through a holiday without gaining a pound...or an ounce for that matter! And guess what?? Even if you run a ton of miles (trust me, I have tried this...), work out like a crazy body builder or even do 3 of Deanne's bootcamps this week...NOTHING, no NOTHING can make up for what mistakes go into your mouth.

So...choose wisely. Be the smug one that passes on all of the crap. Seriously...you can do this...heck, WE can do this!!

Now, go ahead and tell us all of your successes...every time you pass up an opportunity to eat junk, you have my permission to post a comment on this blog...let's rack 'em up!! It really does help to inspire each other!

I will start...today my son offered, dangled and begged me to eat one of my fave candy indulgences (red twizlers if you must know). I did not. No, I did not.

Stay strong my friends...and share your stories...

Tips...

Okay... I will start with Deanne's tip challenge. Here are a few tips that I will share with you...
1. BTPB (better than peanut butter) is cheaper at Trader Joes than Henry's
2. Greens and Whey protein cheaper at Henry's than Jimbo's
Also, MRM brand is the same as the brand Deanne recommends but cheaper. (yeah...trying to budget--for the first time in like 20 years...wish me luck:)
3. Greens give me gas.
4. The best tasting (and using best is quite a stretch here) out of the four greens that I tried was
"Amazing Grass"
5. When trying to stay with the food plan...having a buddy to text at critical moments in the day
will SAVE you!...give me your cell # and I can be your food buddy.

That's it for now...you can add your tips by clicking comments...go ahead....

Recap of Week 5 for the Women and Week 6 for the Men

Well another beautiful week in San Diego and some great heart pounding, calorie burning workouts together. We kicked off the week Monday at 6am with a guest from the Men's Boot Camp. Eliot Ward joined us. I didn't want to scare Eliot off so I decided not to partner him with Keely. Andrea showed him how the ladies like to workout. We did our band runs and our relay races through the ladders. There was some good grunting going on by the end of the workout.

I noticed with the 9:15 group that everyone is looking much stronger than they were 5 weeks ago, despite many people getting over colds and bronchitis.

We had a tough circuit on Wednesday at Torrey Del Mar and tried out the ropes with the women for the first time. Wow! A minute on those ropes feels like an eternity. I heard from everyone that they were pretty sore after that workout. Hopefully you got a good day or two of yoga in also this week.

The men did their timed obstacle course since it was their last official session and across the board everyone improved their times. We added some fancy ropes, heavier kettlebells and even some BOSU's for the circuit on Thursday. Men and BOSU's is often very entertaining but I have to say, this group is especially coordinated.

We ended our week at Torrey Hills and spent the first 30 minutes on the stairs. Then the women did a fast paced circuit using ropes, kettle bells, jump ropes, bands and some of Emma's killer lunges. I figure if we all keep doing Emma's lunges, we'll soon have Emma's butt.

Good luck to fellow campers Trish Wood and Keely Barrera. They will be heading up to Long Beach. Keely will finally get the opportunity to cross off marathon from her To-Do List. That's one monkey she's got to get off her back. Make us proud Keely and at least show up Monday morning to fill us in. Trish will be doing another 1/2 marathon. This has to be at least 5 for you since I've known you.

Have a great weekend and I'll see everyone next week for some great workouts!

More Mondays@ 6

*Occasionally we have been known to allow one of "the guys" to join us on Mondays...we don't cut them any slack...right, Eliot?

*In the middle picture as Deanne is explaining our morning drill...different levels of enthusiasm...or NOT...good morning, Cori! Keely looks downright angry and some of us...just not payin' attention folks.

*I know some of these are blurry...Deanne had my camera..but ya gotta' love Anni's smile...perhaps the honeymoon is not over ;)

*Andrea was Eliot's partner for the workout...is she smirking?!

Another Great Week of Forever Fit Boot Camps

It's been a beautiful week in Carmel Valley and Torrey Del Mar. Monday morning we did our timed 1/2 mile runs (in the dark) and found that so many campers had shaved off 10, 15 even 30 seconds off their time. We did our favorite circuit again. I continued to reinforce Kathleen's notion that if I am talking, I'm not watching the stop watch. Another good reason to wear your watches to camp! We missed Anni who was still enjoying Hawaii on her honeymoon. Check out this beautiful picture of your fellow camper!

I saw a new side to the Wednesday group. The words "relay race" bring out a very enthusiastic side to that group. We ran through ladders, swung (is that a word?) kettle bells, and tried out a few new creative partner exercises using body weight only. Who needs equipment?

Thursday morning the guys broke in my new ropes. Check out the video below of Marc Morley and Todd Wilson. They all picked this up quick and were asking to go longer next time. Ladies, wait till you try this. If you love the feeling of your heart in your throat, you will dig it!

We ended the week with a great workout today at Torrey Hills. The weather is perfect now for our boot camps. The stairs are getting a little easier (not easy, just easier) and those towel pull-ups look almost too easy. Time to add some reps. Have a great weekend everyone. Emma and I are putting together a little Forever Fit Coastal Run for a Saturday morning. We'll let you know when.

This is how the boys ride!

Thursday morning...sun rising...guys workin' it...

This rope thing...it's new...it's comin' to your camp and it is TOUGH!!

Comment, really!

So...I am working at keeping this blog up to date, current, exciting and fun to follow...what I need from you?? Let me know you looked at it with the smallest of comments. You see, I have some great pics and yes, even some video footage to post but am waiting 'til I can be sure someone besides Deanne has looked at the recent posts...I am just saying...

Case you are new to blogging...just click on "comments" type anything in the little box and the blog will walk you through c'mon you can do it--I know it!

I just added a new feature for the "pressed for time" blogger or the "too embarrassed to be original" blogger...just click on the reaction box (that appears at the bottom of each post) which you feel most appropriately conveys your reaction to the post and... you are done! Easy shmeezie...I am happy. U R 2!!

Happy Thursday!!

You're on KCC!! (Kathleen's Candid Camera)

So...just a warning that I will be showing up at random times to take pics of your bootcamp sessions. Yes, that is right. You may be thinking...o my! I thought Deanne told me that we would be able to approve pics before she uses them. Well...she is not using them...(I am) so in my experience...anything goes in the blogging world...BEWARE! you have been warned.

(honestly, I can use discretion...I will. I am your friend. besides..I work out with you and you could get some sweet revenge...)

I showed up today at Torrey Del Mar Park. A beautiful setting amongst gorgeous homes...who would ever guess that there would be many women show up for some good ol' fashioned sweating...

take a look:

You were an inspiration ladies!!
really...I wanted to put down my camera and join in...
but i did not...

Where will my camera take me next??...stay tuned...

cracko'dawn

So...this morning...about 5:20 a.m. when my alarm went off for bootcamp...

I felt like this ...only with more body fat, mind you.

And I asked myself?? What am I doing??

I managed to throw on some work out attire, plaster my contact lenses to the eyeballs and head out. Even on the [freeway] drive there I kept thinking...WHAT AM I DOING?

I think I reach my level of consciousness after the warm up and about half way into the first round of challenges that Deanne has orchestrated for my morning wake-up call.

And it was at this point I realized...yeah, I kind of do like this. This is a good way to start my day.
I can feel good all day that I got myself off the pillow for this.

So enjoy your week of bootcamps fellow campers...
[and just 3 words of warning: shoulders, back and tris]

What NOT To Say

I feel a little behind with the start up of this latest round of Boot Camps because, you see, I started on Labor Day which for me meant it was like a "play camp". Oh, don't get me wrong...there was plenty of work involved but seriously, there were kids there playing games and doing jumping jacks, former professional athletes (okay just one but..) flinging footballs at me and just how's a girl supposed to stay focused in that kind of environment?!

I take this boot camping seriously. And lucky for you I am willing to share some of that which I have learned with the rest of you...especially you newbies.

What Not To Say at a Forever Fit Boot Camp:

1) I wasn't even sore from our last boot camp!

2) Are we doing the stairs again?

3) Deanne, I think your scale is light today!

4) I hate burpies!

5) Only 5 more weeks of this and then I can eat what I want again!

6) But Diet Coke has no calories!

7) I don't like Barley!

8) Are you even feeling this?

9) I don't do push ups.

10) Does she offer an advanced camp?

11) I am going to kick Keely's butt!

12) Do we still work out if its...(any of the following) hot, cold, dark and/or raining?

You are welcome.

Now let's go fuel up only when empty (but not too full); change our mindset from fat livin' to fit now and forever; and work out like crazy ladies 'til we all look like Emma....hoo-ah!

Sunrise Run

Wow! great showing from the Forever fitters on the horse trail run this morning. Just cuz I have run a few miles in my life and because I know that (practically) no one reads this blog, [hi Deanne and Keely] I am going to throw some thoughts out to you...

kathleen on running...

1. The reason running gets such a bad rap is because people either only try it once or twice and hate it and then don't try it again or they always try running faster than they can maintain for an extended period of time. [side note: the running we do at bootcamp? not running]

2. You have to be at a certain fitness level to enjoy running. Most forever fitters are already there. If you haven't tried running for awhile, I highly recommend it.

3. The biggest secret is finding your pace. My very favorite way to run is with one (similarly paced) other runner. Of course it helps if that person is a good conversationalist because for me a good run is (almost) always accompanied with good gab.

4. Anytime you throw in a new runner (or group of runners) you have to work to find "that pace" for you. I even started out too fast on the run this morning and so I threw in a quick walk towards the end. I would rather find a pace that I can run the entire run at comfortably then to run fast and later feel like losing my muffins.

5. A good way to maintain pace as well as to increase mileage is to add regular walk breaks. When I run under 6 miles, I usually just run. If I am running further then I add walk breaks every 8 min. I run for 8 and walk for 1min. Most running watches have a way to set this so that you get an alert at 8 and then again at 1 min. I never would have considered running marathons without the walk breaks. (See: Jeff Galloway, Marathon, you can do it! or any of his other running books for that matter) He (Jeff) recommends starting at 3 or 5 min running to 1 minute of walking. I had been running long enough when I got his book that I went for the 8:1. It was hard at first (mentally) to tell myself that walking was okay...I am way over that now. Galloway offers many examples of elite runners who were able to break a time barrier by adding walks to their running. I did a half marathon last year with a group of women and one of the runners and I started together. We enjoyed the conversation but then I got to my walk break...she thought she wouldn't see me again until the end but every running stint I caught up to her until about mile 11 or 12. We ended up finishing within seconds of each other.

6. Running is so efficient! I can easily burn 400-500 calories in less than one hour...like 40 minutes. I will say that it doesn't do it all. I am much more "fit" when I am also doing strength training on a regular basis.

7. So far I have been talking about 4-5 mile runs...the maintenance runs. The real fun comes when you go for the adventure runs which usually means more miles. Every Saturday (give or take 2 or 3) for the past four years I have run a Saturday long run in a beautiful setting...trails, mountains, cities, beaches. Nothing (so far) out shines my favorite San Diego run...It begins at the bottom of the Torrey Pines reserve hill (okay this part not my fave but it is good to get behind you so we start there) up the hill, past the golf course, past UCSD into a gorgeous La Jolla neighborhood then down a (steep) hill to Black's beach then you take the sand (hard packed) back to your car. It is about 9 miles and is o! so gorgeous as you come down to Black's beach...breath taking..the first time I ran it, I cried. (really, it's that good).

So..if you have thought of making running a bigger part of your fitness routine, I hope this gives you the final push...you won't regret it...you might even get hooked:)

homework(out)

So...what is everyone doing on Monday with no bootcamp?? It was tough to have a Monday with no mandatory weigh in as well as no one looking for my food log...what food log?

Anyway...thought I would share my very homemade workout that turned out..well..great for me!
I started with a run around the block (aprox. .3 mile) to warm up...

Next in the house to exercise TV (channel 122) for a 10 min. awesome abs workout

Back to the block (music in ears...faster this time)

TV time...11 min bun and thighs

Running...sprinting at the end...

TV--11 min palates thigh burn.

Total time: aprox. 50 min.
time for a shower...what'd you do today that made you sweat?

Meet Patty

Let me introduce you to Patty PMS. Patty comes to visit on a fairly regular basis. She takes over my food log. Patty eats whatever the heck Patty wants to eat. (Patty sometimes doesn't even log all of the food that enters her mouth-imagine!). Patty is grumpy at boot camp. Bad Patty.

Patty is easy to forget. As soon as she leaves, it's as if she never existed. When Patty is away, I feel certain she will never return, who is she anyway?? But sure enough, when I least expect company...BAM! in walks Patty. So here is my dilemma...Patty is coming..with or without invitation...do I entertain her with or without guilt....hmmm.. You vote!

U Know U R A Forever Fitter When...

This list is no way meant to be all inclusive...please feel free to add to it as you become FFit...

1) You ask your husband for a VO2 max test for Mother's Day

2) You spend time thinking about how to get the most out of your 10%...daily? weekly? each meal?

3) Deanne's voice rings in your ear every time you are making a food choice.

4) You try spreading Better Than Peanut Butter on e v e r y t h i n g.

5)You relate to "Nancy Nibbler" and consider asking Deanne for her contact information. You and she could be BFFS.

6) You secretly hope that "Patty Planner" is assigned to your group in bootcamp so you can kick her hiney in the next competition!

7) You also secretly count the "calories burned per minute" each time you make *whoopie*!
(does she have that number on a chart anywhere??)

8) You spend 2 hours a week minimum collecting food from 4 different grocery stores.

9) You completely turn off anyone who sits down to share a meal with you as you spend the entire time discussing the calorie and nutritional content of what they are swallowing.

10) You find yourself flexing your abs at stoplights, your butt cheeks at drive-throughs and do stretches while waiting in line at the bank.

11) Your bedtime keeps getting earlier and earlier to avoid the late night eating...is 7:00 too early to retire??

12) You find joy in discovering yet one more store that carries Cliff z bars.

13) A heart thrive actually appeals to you.

and now you add...

March Bootcamp Week 1 - Here we go again...

Hi ladies. Awesome workout at Torrey Highlands Park today. What a perfect day with the cool weather and the cloud coverage. You all looked really strong today! Are you going to be ready for summer or what? Don't forget, next week we will meet at Torrey Hills Park for a great butt-kicking stair workout.

Saturday, January 24, 2009

Heading into week 3

Hi ladies. Well it's unanimous. OK, almost. Keely took a little convincing. We will be working out Monday regardless of the weather. Let's meet at Torrey Highlands Park again. If it's raining, we'll be taking off for a running tour of carmel valley. If it's not raining, we'll be heading over the to soggy grass for a band and cardio workout. Warning: you could get wet, grassy and muddy.

I'm working on your 3rd week of menus right now. Is it considered child labor to have my 7 year old daughter putting packets together for 2 hours?

Thursday, January 22, 2009

Are you too girly to workout in the rain?

Hi everyone. They're calling for rain on Monday. I think this adds a new dimension to the challenge and I say we go forward regardless! We'll still meet at the same spot but I'll probably be changing up the workout a bit from what I had planned (it's a surprise ;) )

So let me know how YOU feel about working out in the rain.

Internet Surfing

You have to check out this list of America's worst foods on http://www.menshealth.com/eatthis/the-worst/
They have so many lists of best and worst foods and better options it's fascinating. A dunkin donuts smoothie for instance has more sugar than 4 haagen daaz ice cream bars!

Recipes for Week 2

The Lemon Herb Crusted Tilapia can be made with White Roughy and Roasted Garlic/Fine Herb Bread Crumbs. The brand is called Four Sisters and a Brother and I got it at Henry's. My family loved this recipe.

Heading into week 2

Hi everyone. I'm excited for our second workout tomorrow. My goal is to put you through a really touch cardio and strength circuit and burn at least 500 calories. It's supposed to be warm again tomorrow so dress accordingly and wear your sunscreen. Oh how the rest of the country must hate us right now :)

Hey by the way, I had the lemon herb crusted fish tonight. It's on your menu for Wednesday. The recipe says to use Tilapia but I got some wonderful white roughy from Ralphs. It was delicious. I highly recommend substituting this fish this week and the price was really good, about $4.99 a pound. Also, I got some great stone ground whole wheat bread crumbs with italian herb seasonings at Henry's and it was great in the recipe. I'll bring a package of the bread crumbs tomorrow to show you.

Get a good night sleep! Deanne
